Looking at Blake Carrington During Dynasty Season One

Yes, I am still watching those Season One DYNASTY DVD's and am getting mixed results from my viewing experience. The plot lines that center on actors Dale Robertson and Bo Hopkins are quite good but the rest of the storylines are pretty bad. The main reason for this is that the character who is at the focal point of the series - Blake Carrington - is really poorly devised in the first season.

One of the main problems with the Blake Carrington character in the first season is the fact that he is a dull and loathsome character with no redeeming value. Honestly, the fact that he is loathsome is not so much a big deal because watching a person do evil things is never dull...but the dull part is unforgivable. Blake is such a yawn inducing character you really want to hit the "forward" button ever time he appears. Part of the problem with the character lies in the performance of John Forsythe as he played the character as a heavy as opposed to an anti-hero.

It would seem that Forsythe was repeated his role of the evil judge from 1979's AND JUSTICE FOR ALL as opposed to developing his own unique character. Perhaps he was also bored of doing all the voice overs from CHARLIE'S ANGELS and opted to chew the scenery with this role by playing a dastardly villain. This really doesn't work as a much more multifaceted character is critical for the series success. Thankfully, they would change the character for the better thanks in great part to the inclusion of Joan Collins in  season two.  It was a good thing. The series would have tanked otherwise.
