Voyage Season Three on DVD!
Hey folks…Here is a heads up – The Third Season of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA is coming out on DVD this week. (Well, half up it as it is split into to separate volumes since the season included 30+ episodes) Sure, the third season was the nadir of the series in terms of quality, but for VOYAGE fanatics, this is a welcome addition. (although it is sad when compared to the prior episodes of earlier seasons.)The disk runs about $40.
Part of the problem with the third season (at least the first half of it) is the fact that the episodes are thoroughly boring. Yes, there are a few standout episodes here and there, but there are also a ton of flat stories. In fact, so dull are most of the season three stories, I was compelled to watch one of the dumbest episodes of them all (WEREWOLF) several times mainly because of the action scenes. The season was also repetitive as it TWICE fleeced the Universal Monsters theme (Universal Monsters were HUGE in syndication in the 1960's) not only for a lame werewolf episodes, but an even lamer Creature from the Black Lagoon rip-off episode.
In a way, you almost can't fault the series for slipping into medicrity as there really was no way it was going to be able to maintain the huge budgets it had in the past. The program had is solid audience, but it wasn't cracking the top twenty so keeping a "A" budget would have ultimately resulted in the series losing money. Voyage is an odd series that is known for its unevenness..how is that for a testament???
